The Five Necessary Skills For Great PR Professionals
By Ron Simms Jr., Digital Communications Specialist
Whether you're a public relations neophyte, or an industry vetern, here are five traits essential to being a PR professional.
Paying attention to details – With so many distractions at your fingertips, including content to read and overly demanding clients, PR pros must be able to pay attention to details.
Listening to understand, not to reply – When talking to someone, make a concentrated effort to really hear the other person. Respond only after you've gathered your thoughts and can give an educated answer.
Always being curious – Find out details that are not evident at first sight and learn about new tactics or strategies that can benefit your clients.
Providing unfailing helpfulness – Be of help to others. Give a hand to someone who needs you. PR is about building meaningful relationships, whether they be between you and the media, your clients, or your colleagues.
- Maintaining professionalism – Learn to say no when things get out of hand or go against what you believe to be right. Don't put yourself in compromising positions.
